Mimi’s Chicken

Whether you’re cruising down Western Ave or west on Division St. it’s easy to spot the bright orange facade that is Mimi’s Chicken. Having popped up all across south Chicago, Mimi says she loves Humboldt Park the most. “It’s a good area, a lot of traffic, and good people.”

We visited Mimi and family on International Women’s Day, and learned about her Thai roots and what she loves about Chicago. Coming from a small town that had no running water or electricity, Mimi, now 74 years young, with younger siblings, enjoys the city life. “Chicago is easy to get around and the people here are more friendly than anywhere in the U.S.,” says Mimi.

Open 7 days a week, Mimi and her family operate both locations, dedicated to providing affordable food for their customers and support to the community. For years, Mimi has partnered with The Healing Corner, a non-profit organization that shares resources and actively works within neighborhoods to address violence. “[My] Philosophy is if I see a problem, I think, who is going to help? I’m open minded and I learn everyday, to not be prejudiced, to see humanity. I love humanity,” Mimi says. "We help people and good things come to us.”

Must be why there’s always a long line at Mimi’s. If you haven’t tried Mimi’s famous chicken wings, they’re open Noon - 8pm. Find them on Division St. & Hamlin and be sure to bring cash. You don’t want to miss out on this Humboldt Park gem.
